Transplants
The transplant programs were started more than thirty year ago,
with the academia and investigative support of the Medicine Faculty
of the Universidad de Antioquia. Since the, the achievements have
been constant and for this it has been positioned as one of the
most advanced transplant units in Colombia and Latin America.
Our commitment with the patients and their families is to offer
a high quality service in the stages of pre-transplant, during the
transplant and after in the follow-up, which should guarantee a
good quality of life.
The Transplant Unit is conformed by an interdisciplinary group
of specialist doctors, capable in the area and with high experience
in the attention and management of the patients, with the participation
of professionals of diverse assistential and administrative areas.
The Transplant Unit has new building, constructed in 1998 in accordance
with international standards established for the integrated management
of these programs.

illness.
KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
Kidney transplant was started in the Hospital in the year
1973 and since that date up to now it has been and uninterrupted
work, reaching great recognition in the national and international
ambit. In the month of April 2005 3000 kidney transplants had been
performed. The success obtained by the program reflects in the results
which are at same level of those of the developed countries.
The Hospital is in a capacity of realizing transplants with live
or cadaver donors.
In the Renal Unit of the HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO SAN VICENTE DE
PAUL the patient receives an integrated management of those health
problems directly related with kidney illness and its complications
and of the problems that may derive from the treatment, that is,
from dialysis (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) or from kidney
transplant.
The Renal Unit at HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO SAN VICENTE DE PAUL is
the result of the association of several entities that offer the
best they have to give the patient, high technology solutions, offered
with the highest human, scientific and assitential quality.

LIVER TRANSPLANT
The HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO SAN VICENTE DE PAUL is pioneer and leader
in the area of liver transplants. In 1976 it realized the first
liver transplant in Latin America.
Now days with an average of 50 liver transplants per year, the
Hospital is the leader in Latin America and it is the reference
site nationally and internationally thanks to a team work that guarantees
one of the shortest waiting lists in the world, one month. It has
a success rate comparable to those of any other first level world
center,

HEART TRANSPLANT
As one of its biggest strengths is that within the Unit there
is a Cardiac Failure Clinic where patients with indication for transplant
are evaluated in a multidisciplinary way. A follow-up is done until
they fulfill the conditions to be included in the waiting list of
patients to be transplanted.
Before the Unit was created, several professionals, integrants
now, participated actively in the heart transplants realized in
the Cardiovascular Clinic since 1985.

TRASPLANTE DE CELULAS MADRE A CORAZON
La información cardiovascular sigue siendo una de
las primeras causad de enfermedad y muerte en la población
adulta. Para su tratamiento se han empleado distintos métodos
de invasión a nivel de los vasos coronarios siendo necesario
complementar con nuevas técnicas de regeneración celular,
en día llamado Trasplante autólogo de células
progenitoras de la médula ósea para pacientes con
falla cardíaca severa.
En el año 2004, el Hospital Universitario San Vicente de
Paúl fue pionero en Colombia en la realización de

TRASPLANTE DE CELULAS MADRE HEMATOPOYÉTICAS
Conocido como Trasplante de Médula Ósea
Se realiza en el Hospital desde 1976, cuando se llevó a
cabo el primer trasplante en Iberoamérica.
Actualmente constituye una de las armas terapéuticas más
importantes para el tratamiento de la enfermedad residual mínima
en los pacientes con leucemias agudas y crónicas, linfomas,
cáncer de mama y otros tumores.
El Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paúl y el grupo
de trasplante de médula compuesto por médicos especialistas
en Hematología y Oncología tienen, al igual que los
demás grupos de trasplantes en forma permanente, todas las
ayudas diagnósticas requeridas y un Banco de Sangre en el
cual se realizan los tratamientos requeridos a la sangre a utilizar.
Para estos trasplantes se trabaja en forma conjunta el Hospital
Universitario San Vicente de Paúl, la Universidad de Antioquia
y el New York Blood Bank.
En el año se están realizando 25 trasplantes aproximadamente.

TRASPLANTE DE INTESTINO DELGADO Y MULTIVISCERAL
Se ha implementado como una opción terapéutica
para pacientes con síndrome de falla intestinal (síndrome
de intestino corto y trastornos relacionados con la mala absorción
de los nutrientes). Se puede trasplantar el intestino delgado solamente
o combinado con otros órganos como estómago, duodeno,
hígado y páncreas.
Como opción terapéutica para este tipo de pacientes
ha sido aprobado a nivel mundial desde la década de los años
90 y en Colombia el Hospital hizo el primer trasplante en el año
2004.

TRASPLANTE DE LARINGE Y TRAQUEA
El Hospital realizó el segundo trasplante de laringe
en el mundo y los primeros trasplantes de tráquea. También
practica con éxito los trasplantes simultáneos de
laringe y tráquea. Para ello se han utilizado nuevas técnicas
que permiten que los pacientes recuperen rápidamente las
funciones de estos órganos.
Los trasplantes de laringe y tráquea se realizan en pacientes
con traumas complejos, estenosis compleja sin posibilidad de recuperación
funcional con otro tipo de cirugía, tumores benignos gigantes
de laringe y quemaduras de la vía aérea.
El Grupo de trasplante de laringe está compuesto por especialistas
en:

Otorrinolaringología
Especialistas en áreas de soporte: inmunología, patología,
radioterapia, neumología, nefrología, psiquiatría.
Grupo de apoyo compuesto por: foniatría, enfermería,
nutrición y trabajo social; también el soporte de
todas las áreas de apoyo diagnóstico y terapéutico
de un Hospital de alta complejidad como lo es el San Vicente de
Paúl.
