Neonatal Service

With capacity for 40 beds, it is located on the first floor of the Maternity Building. It is divided in three levels of attention according to the complexity of the patient.

Basic Care

It takes care of newly born patients up to the age of one month who require special care due to low birth weight, being premature and having respiratory, metabolic and hemodynamic and infectious problems.

Realizes epidemiological investigation and infection control processes in order to guarantee optimum care of the patient.

There is an interdisciplinary team, neonatal physicians, general pediatricians, specialized nurses to guarantee optimum attention to patients 24 hours a day.
Furthermore, it has the support of professionals in nutrition, respiratory therapy and social work.

This area is endowed with modern high technology equipment to guarantee the safe management of neonates in critical state, including high frequency ventilation.


Programs developed by the Neonatal Unit:

Screening of retinopathy of newborns :
For early identification of patients at risk for visual problems.

Breast Feeding:
It seeks to encourage breast feeding from the beginning for the adequate development of the newborn and bonding between mother and child.

Adequate stimulation:
Seeks a progressive adaptation of the newborn to its new environment and favors the affective bonding.

Nutritional support for the newborn:
Offers support to the ill newborn in order to achieve adequate nutrition which favors recovery and development.

Participating family:
Integrates the family of the newborn in the recovery process.

In the meeting room, an interdisciplinary team of professionals carries out an educational program for mothers with training for the adequate management of the neonate with problems.

Upon dismissal, the patient is enrolled in a periodical follow-up program by neonatal physicians and other professional. Pediatric ophthalmology and physical therapy follow-up are outstanding.
